Beyond the Basics - mudrooms and entryways

Not every house has a dedicated mudroom or foyer where you can drop everything when you enter the house. A wonderful solution to create an instant entryway is to add a piece of furniture facing away from the main room where you can store keys, gloves, etc. It separates the living area from the entry area. A freestanding coat rack will not take up much space if added to the end of the unit.

If there isn't enough space to add extra furniture to the room, place existing furniture in a way that you may separate the entry space. Perhaps a sofa could be place so that it is facing into the room and a sofa table or bench could be placed behind it with some storage bins or baskets to hold accessories.

In the case of rainy or snowy weather, you want to be sure to protect your floors, so a carpet remnant or moisture-pulling mat would be a good addition to the space just inside your door. You may also want to add a shoe/boot tray close to the door to hold the shoes left behind and capture any excess drippings. Fill it with garden pebbles to hold it in place and to absorb any moisture better.
