What's on my mind...

Pre-holidays de-cluttering

We have two kids, but enough toys for the entire neighborhood. And here comes Christmas. And five weeks later is my son's birthday. I think it's time to de-clutter that toy room.

Throughout the year, I try and sift through the toys and toss the ones that are missing too many pieces to salvage, give away whatever I can to whomever can use it, and put the rest into the big donation boxes. But it's a tricky and sneaky operation. I have to do it when the kids aren't around–and it's not very often that I'm alone in my house with several hours free to do nothing but go through toys. It's time-consuming and I have so many other things to do. But this is the time of year when I schedule time for it. It's liberating and gives me such a feeling of accomplishment! I know that in a matter of weeks all of the extra space I've made will be filled up once again, but at least it will be orderly for a while.

Need some help getting organized for the holidays? Give me a call and I'll help to prepare the house for decorating, make it functional for hosting holiday get-togethers,  and get it ready to accept more toys!

My oldest daughter is about to be 5 (4 days before Christmas)... I try to "de-toy" the house every 4 months or so. However, even at her young age she has an amazing memory. I have to actually hide the toys in the basement and wait about 2 months- yes- months, before I can permanently get rid of them. So, after getting busted a few times, I finally decided to just involve her in the process of letting go of things. She knows her old toys will be enjoyed by another child and is happy to help when knowing that sometimes the other child has far less than she does.

Anne, it's wonderful that even at this young age, your daughter is concerned about helping others who are less fortunate! And what a great lesson to teach her!
